Word for the Day: Monday, January 31, 2011

The Word for Today (Monday) is Innocence.

The Innocence of young children: Listen to their philosophy of life. You might be surprised.

Sunday, January 30, 2011

Word for the Day: Sunday, January 30, 2011

The Word for Today (Sunday) is Forgiveness.

A general philosophy of forgiveness is a great thing to have (and then, still handle individual situations by their merit).

Often, the most important person to forgive is yourself, by the way.

Weekly Theme: Week of 1/30 to 2/05/2011

The Theme for this Week is Philosophy.

My favorite take on this topic is from the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series: A search for information on Life, the Universe and Everything.

In my opinion, it takes life experience to gain a well-rounded philosophy. Book reading, by itself is not enough.

Saturday, January 29, 2011

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 29, 2011

The Word for Today (Saturday) is Authenticity.

This fits in with Education and Teaching (themes) by its lack: It doesn't work well to be "taught" by a counterfeit teacher. A class doesn't go well with students who aren't out to seriously learn.

The bottom line is that it's best to be authentic to yourself.

Friday, January 28, 2011

Word for the Day: Friday, January 28, 2011

The Word for Today (Friday) is Interpretation.

Language studies are, of course, a big part of Education and Teaching (our Themes). Those who know more than one language have a lot of jobs open to them that are not present for those who only know one language.

There are, of course, other aspects to Interpretation. For example, how do you interpret your moods?

Thursday, January 27, 2011

Word for the Day: Thursday, January 27, 2011

The Word for Today (Thursday) is Socialization.

This ties in well with Education and Teaching (themes), as schools are very social places. Also, people learn how to socialize in school, either formally (from teachers) or informally (other students).

Wednesday, January 26, 2011

Word for the Day: Wednesday, January 26, 2011

The Word for Today (Wednesday) is Concentration.

This fits well with our Themes (Education and Teaching), as it's important to concentrate, both as a teacher and as a student.

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Word for the Day: Tuesday, January 25, 2011

The Word for Today (Tuesday) is Acceptability.

The tie-in to our themes (Education and Teaching) are actually a bit controversial, as people don't agree on what is acceptable and what is not in today's schools. Where a person stands on this topic often is related to his/her political views.

The most important thing is to be acceptable to yourself.

Monday, January 24, 2011

Word for the Day: Monday, January 24, 2011

The Word for Today (Monday) is Generosity.

I consider this a fantastic concept to teach (theme) new people (i.e. children).

I suggest performing a random act of Generosity today.

Sunday, January 23, 2011

Word for the Day: Sunday, January 23, 2011

The Word for Today (Sunday) is Sharing.

There are multiple connections between this Word and the Themes (see prior post). For example, a good part of classroom education is having students sharing their own insights on the topics in the class. Sharing comes across as more voluntary than being called upon.

Weekly Themes: Week of January 23-29, 2011

The Themes for this Week are Education and Teaching.

There is a relationship between these two themes, but they are not the same. Training is very focused and specific (such as how to make lattes in a coffee house), yet teaching is more general, such as learning a major in college. Education is a cumulative thing, over time.

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Words for the Day: Saturday, January 22, 2011

The two Words for Today (Saturday) are Overview and Perspective.

These two words form an Executive Summary, which is an excellent tool for Retention (our Theme).

Don't underestimate the power of Perspective, which we all need at times.

Friday, January 21, 2011

Word for the Day: Friday, January 21, 2011

The Word for Today (Friday) is Reflection.

Taking time to reflect on what you are learning definitely helps with retention (the theme).

Thursday, January 20, 2011

Word for the Day: Thursday, January 20, 2011

The Word for Today (Thursday) is Study.

This word goes well with Retention (our Theme), because you retain something (i.e. a book) better if you study it, than just simply reading it.

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Word for the Day: Wednesday, January 19, 2011

The Word for Today (Wednesday) is Absorption.

Using absorption, a sponge retains water. We can use absorption (i.e. eyes and ears open) to retain knowledge.

Tuesday, January 18, 2011

Word for the Day: Tuesday, January 18, 2011

The Word for Today (Tuesday) is Review.

This is a very important part of Retention (theme), as it usually takes more than one pass (say through a book) to remember it.

Monday, January 17, 2011

Word for the Day: Monday, January 17, 2011

The Word for Today (Monday) is Experimentation.

An important part of science classes are lab experiments. Just like any learning, retention (theme) is important. What I "retained" about experimentation? Have fun, learn a lot, but be careful.

Sunday, January 16, 2011

Word for the Day: Sunday, January 16, 2011

The Word for Today (Sunday) is Recognition.

In general, I recognize those who have helped me through the years. But, specific to this week, I recognize those who helped me develop the ability to retain what I read and learn.

Weekly Theme: Week of January 16-22, 2011

The Theme for this Week is Retention.

This theme has good aspects and less good aspects. For example, it is good to retain what you read or learn. But even some aspects, such as retaining water in the body, can be a good thing, when compared with the opposite, which would be to be chronically dehydrated.

Saturday, January 15, 2011

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 15, 2011

The Word for Today (Saturday) is Resolve.

This ties both ways to Preservation (the Theme): "Preserve our Resolve", as well as "Resolve to Preserve".

It is interesting that this Word came within 15 days of the New Year, when people make (sometimes only to break) Resolutions.

Friday, January 14, 2011

Word for the Day: Friday, January 14, 2011

The Word for Today (Friday) is Courage.

This is a loaded word, using a word that the right wing does. To tie this into current events (Tuscon, AZ), it takes courage to be yourself, especially when there are those who might not even want you to be alive.

Hint: The world will be quite boring if everybody thinks alike.

Thursday, January 13, 2011

Words for the Day: Thursday, January 13, 2011

There are two Words for Today (Thursday): Strength and Empowerment.

It can take lots of strength and empowerment to preserve certain items, depending on how big and/or heavy these items are.

Wednesday, January 12, 2011

Word for the Day: Wednesday, January 12, 2011

The Word for Today (Wednesday) is Competence.

I guess a good question for me to ask myself: "Am I a competent enough Scholar to retain what I learn?"

A good step for anyone, by the way, is to be competent to be yourself.

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

Word for the Day: Tuesday, January 11, 2011

The Word for Today (Tuesday) is Endurance.

It is, of course, easier to preserve things when you have good endurance. And, of course, yoga helps.

Monday, January 10, 2011

Word for the Day: Monday, January 10, 2011

The Word for Today (Monday) is Fertility.

The connection between this Word and Preservation (our Theme) is a bit dicey: "Preserve the right to be fertile and multiply"?

Sunday, January 9, 2011

Word for the Day: Sunday, January 9, 2011

The Word for Today (Sunday) is Stability.

This works both directions: "Preserve stability", as well as "Stability makes preservation easier".

Weekly Theme: Week of January 9-15, 2011

The Theme for this Week is Preservation.

This marks the Scholar Month and Warrior Week. And Scholars love to preserve, especially for history.

One place where I was personally affected was the absence of Preservation, when the Buddha statues were destroyed before the Afghanistan War began.

Saturday, January 8, 2011

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 8, 2011

The Word for Today (Saturday) is Release.

Let us do a detailed analysis of the Release Button in our lives. Yes, the one that releases us from the self-made boxes and prisons that we all have in our lives.

Friday, January 7, 2011

Word for the Day: Friday, January 7, 2011

The Word for Today (Friday) is Aspiration.

Tying this to Analysis (the theme) is not as clear today, unless I say, "I aspire to be the best analyst I can". On second thought, that sounds good to me.

Thursday, January 6, 2011

Word for the Day: Thursday, January 6, 2011

The Word for Today (Thursday) is Contrast.

Good analysts recognize the need for contrast in their lives. However, how much? Too much is scary, yet too little can get a bit boring. It's sort of like a sine wave going down a stream.

Wednesday, January 5, 2011

Word for the Day: Wednesday, January 5, 2011

The Word for Today (Wednesday) is Adaptability.

Good analysts need to be adaptable, or flexible, or they will have difficulty in analyzing things they didn't already in their comfort zone.

Tuesday, January 4, 2011

Words for the Day: Tuesday, January 4, 2011

The Words for Today (Tuesday) are Agility and Grace.

Even analysis (theme) can require agility and grace at times, especially if a change in location is desired, to assist in an analysis.

To develop these traits, I recommend Yoga.

Monday, January 3, 2011

Word for the Day: Monday, January 3, 2011

The Word for Today (Monday) is Acceleration.

How does Analysis (theme) fit with Acceleration? Practically, analyzing your speed (for example, watching that speedometer) can help prevent speeding tickets. On the other side, there is an acceleration in information, including analysis of that information, available on the Internet.

Sunday, January 2, 2011

Words for the Day: Sunday, January 2, 2011

The Words for Today (Sunday) are Patience and Tolerance.

The best Analysts, in my opinion, are both patient, and tolerate what they are analyzing. And this is often found by its opposite: If forced to figure out something unpleasant, a person often is impatient to get on to something else.

In general, a little patience goes a long ways.

Weekly Theme: Week of January 2-8, 2011

The Theme for this Week is Analysis.

The two Michael Roles for this Theme are Scholar (month) and Artisan (week). To analyze is to study, in a way, but usually via direct examination, rather than book study (though you can certainly look up what you are analyzing).

Incidentally, I have a lot of fun analyzing my life, and analyzing reality itself. Try it some time.

Saturday, January 1, 2011

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 1, 2011

The Word for Today (Saturday) is Acknowledgment.

To continue with Archives (our Theme), yes, acknowledge them. Public libraries especially (as they are the Archives that are most accessible to the population).

Happy new year!
