Word for the Day: Sunday, January 31, 2010

The Word for Today is Stability.

There are often conflicts between the need for Stability (or Security) and the need for adventure.

However, I find that Stability can provide a good foundation for "safe adventure".

Weekly Theme: Week of 1/31 to 2/06/2010

The Theme for this Week is Preservation.

As a historian, this is a big theme for me, but there are other aspects of preservation than this. For example, the Preservation of our Environment.

Saturday, January 30, 2010

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 30, 2010

The Word for Today is Release.

By definition, this is a "freeing" word. What limitation/box/prison do I want to release myself from? Perhaps that would be a good exercise for today.

Friday, January 29, 2010

Word for the Day: Friday, January 29, 2010

The Word for Today is Aspiration.

This word has many meanings, including medical ones (for example, aspirate the lungs, to remove the liquid, so a person can breath on his/her own).

The meaning I would like to remind people of, however, is to vow to be the best you can be. In other words, don't compete so much against other people, but compete to be your best.

Thursday, January 28, 2010

Word for the Day: Thursday, January 28, 2010

The Word for Today is Contrast.

This word implies duality: Inner verses outer? Left verses right? Good verses evil? Democrat verses Republican?

My best suggestion is to be aware of these contrasts, without letting them rule your life.

Wednesday, January 27, 2010

Word for the Day: Wednesday, January 27, 2010

The Word for Today is Adaptability.

This is a trait of flexibility, which fits in with yesterday's Agility and Grace. In other words, flexible people adapt to their environment. Inflexible people ask their environment to adapt to them.

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Words for the Day: Tuesday, January 26, 2010

The Words for Today are Agility and Grace.

What has helped in my case is learning how to walk very slowly.

But remember that these words go beyond the physical body.

Monday, January 25, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, January 25, 2010

The Word for Today is Acceleration.

This could be a day to be careful about safety. Please treat acceleration carefully if driving a car.

Sunday, January 24, 2010

Words for the Day: Sunday, January 24, 2010

The Words for Today are Patience and Tolerance.

Like I've said before, these words work well together. In fact, their opposites also go together, as a person who is highly impatient is typically intolerant to the one forcing him/her to slow down.

Weekly Theme: Week of January 24-30, 2010.

The Theme for this Week is Analysis.

I believe that this attribute (a blend of Scholar and Artisan) is one way of thinking before acting or speaking. (We already had Thoughtfulness last Wednesday, by the way).

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 23, 2010

The Word for Today is Acknowledgment.

It is important to acknowledge those who help you succeed, or, simply, who show kindness to you.

Friday, January 22, 2010

Word for the Day: Friday, January 22, 2010

The Word for Today is Kindness.

The world will be a greater place if people perform random acts of Kindness. Enough of this, and we will not need wars anymore.

Thursday, January 21, 2010

Word for the Day: Thursday, January 21, 2010

The Word for Today is Encouragement.

It is amazing how many of these recent words can be summarized by, "A little goes a long way". But this is amazingly true about Encouragement. (Yes, tomorrow's also: Kindness).

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Word for the Day: Wednesday, January 20, 2010

The Word for Today is Thoughtfulness.

A little of this goes a LONG way!

One way to look at this is Thoughtfulness = Full of Thought.

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Word for the Day: Tuesday, January 19, 2010

The Word for Today is Support.

Who supports you? Who do you support? These are good questions to keep in mind.

Monday, January 18, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, January 18, 2010

The Word for Today is Comfort.

What immediately comes to me is the lack of comfort in Haiti. It would be great if we could export Comfort.

Sunday, January 17, 2010

Word for the Day: Sunday, January 17, 2010

The Word for Today is Nourishment.

How this goes with the weekly theme (Archives) is anyone's guess! I guess that taking frequent backups on your computer is a form of nourishment to the computer.

Weekly Theme: Week of January 17-23, 2010

The Theme for this Week is Archives.

As a Historian, I understand the need for this theme quite well.

One other thing, a bit more practical is the need to keep backups for your computer data.

Note that this begins the Scholar Michael Month.

Saturday, January 16, 2010

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 16, 2010

The Word for Today is Prosperity.

Like a lot of these terms, this one is relative. Prosperous in one country can be poverty in another, for example.

But like I've said before, there is more than money to prosperity.

Friday, January 15, 2010

Word for the Day: Friday, January 15, 2010

The Word for Today is Liberation.

The word "Liberate" typically goes with the word "From". And what's the best thing to liberate yourself from? Limitation.

Thursday, January 14, 2010

Word for the Day: Thursday, January 14, 2010

The Word for Today is Wisdom.

Wisdom comes from life experience, not book learning.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Word for the Day: Wednesday, January 13, 2010

The Word for Today is Impartiality.

This is a pragmatic aspect, designed to see what is actually occurring. We want our news companies to be impartial, for example.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Word for the Day: Tuesday, January 12, 2010

The Word for Today is Consequence.

I see this as the Law of Karma: Actions can create reactions.

A while back, there was a TV show, "Truth or Consequences". I find this interesting, as, when in the middle of Karma, there can be a "fog" that puts truth into the background. Thus, consequence.

Monday, January 11, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, January 11, 2010

The Word for Today is Elimination.

This word has negative connotations, but that depends on what is being eliminated. Eliminating things that do not work in your life can be quite positive.

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Word for the Day: Sunday, January 10, 2010

The Word for Today is Self-Reliance.

Self-reliance? Rely on the self? Why not?

The Theme for this Week is Strategy.

This is the plan of action. The blueprint for the future.

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 9, 2010

The Word for Today is Expansion.

This is like breathing in and out: Expansion and contraction. The United States economy also appears to go through expansion and contraction cycles. (Or over-expansion and burst, such as Dot Com in the 1990's and the housing situation now). So remember that these two concepts go together.

Friday, January 8, 2010

Words for the Day: Friday, January 8, 2010

Two Words for Today: Trust and Faith.

It is interesting to see people demanding trust, especially governments. You must trust police officers, for example, which makes it troublesome when police officers go bad. But in the end, trust must be earned.

I heard an acronym once for FAITH: Father And I Together Here. It makes sense, but do take into consideration that faith should not be blind.

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Word for the Day: Thursday, January 7, 2010

The Word for Today is Gratitude.

Instead of waiting for once a year for Thanksgiving, perhaps it would be better to set aside a "Thanksgiving Hour" each day. Gratitude is a powerful force.

Wednesday, January 6, 2010

Word for the Day: Wednesday, January 6, 2010

The Word for Today is Equality.

This word has made me think of sameness. But it doesn't have to be that way. Because equal opportunity can allow people to bring out their unique talents, allowing variety in the world.

Tuesday, January 5, 2010

Word for the Day: Tuesday, January 5, 2010

The Word for Today is Prudence.

This is a pragmatic aspect, suggesting thinking before acting and speaking.

Monday, January 4, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, January 4, 2010

The Word for Today is Innocence.

Which definition is more important? The innocence of young children or the opposite of guilty? I assume the response would be different, depending on where the question is asked.

Sunday, January 3, 2010

Word for the Day: Sunday, January 3, 2010

The Word for Today is Forgiveness.

This is the antidote to the endless revenge cycle you see in the world. Enough forgiveness and I believe we could even end wars.

Weekly Theme: Week of January 3-9, 2010

The Theme for this Week is Usefulness.

What does it mean to be useful? And this, of course, goes way beyond "day job" (where people often compete for a chance to be useful to a company).

Saturday, January 2, 2010

Word for the Day: Saturday, January 2, 2010

The Word for Today is Authenticity.

What is real? What is authentic? Sometimes, it is hard to tell. But, as always, the best is to be authentic to yourself.

Friday, January 1, 2010

Word for the Day: Friday, January 1, 2010

The Word for Today is Interpretation.

Now that 2009 is finished, it is time to interpret what it meant for us. This is likely to be a large task.
