Word for the Day: Tuesday, August 31, 2010

The Word for Today (Tuesday) is Acceptability.

One of the seven Goals of the Michael Teachings is Acceptance.

It is pretty universal to want to be accepted. A good start is to generally accept others. This is a part of acceptability that can be overlooked.

Monday, August 30, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, August 30, 2010

The Word for Today (Monday) is Generosity.

This ties to Partnership (theme) well, as partnerships work much better when the partners are generous with each other. (Otherwise, the company [or other joint venture] is likely to collapse).

Sunday, August 29, 2010

Word for the Day: Sunday, August 29, 2010

The Word for Today (Sunday) is Sharing.

This works with Sharing (theme) in more ways than one. Forming a Partnership with somebody requires a lot of sharing. And there are times when sharing your partner with somebody else makes sense.

Weekly Theme: Week of 8/29 to 9/04/2010

The Theme for this Week is Partnership.

Once again, we are not islands unto ourself, but need to work together.

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Words for the Day: Saturday, August 28, 2010

The Words for Today (Saturday) are Overview and Perspective.

There is a book company well known by the College crowd: Cliff Notes. For example, if you have an assignment to read a book, don't buy the book itself, but by the Cliff Notes edition. (Or the Readers Digest Condensed Book of it).

Now the question: Is there a Cliff Notes edition for how to live a life?

Friday, August 27, 2010

Word for the Day: Friday, August 27, 2010

The Word for Today (Friday) is Reflection.

This is both a more detailed form of Review (Tuesday's word), and what a mirror does. Take your pick.

Thursday, August 26, 2010

Word for the Day: Thursday, August 26, 2010

The Word for Today (Thursday) is Study.

As I keep with our theme (Guidance/Mentor), I started with experimentation, then reviewed the results of the experiment. And finally, mused on how it's done in the movies, where you absorb, directly what you need to learn.

This brings me to today, where things get back to the kind of learning that is expected: Studying for exams. Sorry, but back to the real world.

Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Word for the Day: Wednesday, August 25, 2010

The Word for Today (Wednesday) is Absorption.

To tie this to the weekly theme (Guidance/Mentor), I remember fictional stories, having to do with either taking a pill to learn a subject, and/or having their learning occur while they are asleep (subliminally, via headphones).

I'll bet there are people, going through the current, expensive and time consuming method of learning, that wish these methods were not fictional -- that they could simply Absorb what they need to learn.

Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Word for the Day: Tuesday, August 24, 2010

The Word for Today (Tuesday) is Review.

I used an analogy yesterday (Experimentation) of a Chemistry class Laboratory. Well, after a chemistry experiment, there was generally a period of Review and then, possibly a test.

There are lots of opportunities for Review in a human lifetime. Take advantage of them.

Monday, August 23, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, August 23, 2010

The Word for Today (Monday) is Experimentation.

Tying this to our Themes (Guidance/Mentor), one of my favorite High School classes was Chemistry, because we not only were allowed to experiment (called the Lab exercises), but we were given enough latitude to make some mistakes. (Not always: For example, no big explosions occurred in the class I took).

Have fun!

Sunday, August 22, 2010

Word for the Day: Sunday, August 22, 2010

The Word for Today (Sunday) is Recognition.

When I am walking around on a sidewalk, I can often feel a recognition to other people I see. This can be strong or subtle. Sometimes, it is just that the person looks like another person, and I will have to admit to "mistaken identity" if I talk to this person. Other times, it is a person who, for example, works in a store I shop at. But there are times where this recognition goes beyond the laws of physics and seems more like an inner recognition. This fits in well with topics, such as Reincarnation, where people know other people, due to relationships in other lives.

Weekly Themes, Week of August 22 to 28, 2010

The Themes for this Week are Guidance and Mentor.

These words are related, but not exactly the same. Guidance could be as simple as a GPS device telling you what streets to turn on to get to your destination. Being a Mentor is like being a tutor in school, helping another to know more about a topic you are an expert on.

Saturday, August 21, 2010

Word for the Day: Saturday, August 21, 2010

The Word for Today (Saturday) is Resolve.

Two different meanings: "I will not lose my resolve", appears to mean something different than, say, "I resolve to cook more of my own food".

Back to Domestication (weekly theme), resolutions often look quite different, as the age of the family grows.

Friday, August 20, 2010

Word for the Day: Friday, August 20, 2010

The Word for Today (Friday) is Courage.

This word is often misunderstood, with people thinking it means "absence of fear". Actually, no fear is either a neutral thing (where there is no frame of reference for being afraid), or an artificial thing, often called being foolhardy.

Looking at Domestication (weekly theme), it takes a lot of courage to effectively bring up children, especially when giving them some autonomy of their own.

Thursday, August 19, 2010

Words for the Day: Thursday, August 19, 2010

There are Two Words for Today (Thursday): Strength and Empowerment.

To tie this to Domestication (Weekly Theme), a family often has one person who takes charge. It can be a challenge for other members of the family to find their own strength and empowerment, especially if they are children.

One thing I've wondered: Are there families that successfully operate like a democracy?

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Word for the day: Wednesday, August 18, 2010

The Word for Today (Wednesday) is Competence.

Tying this to Domestication (weekly theme) brings up questions on the percentage of households in the world include incompetent parents? In business, there is a book called "The Peter Principle", which proposes that people get promoted to their level of incompetence. Is there a parallel to this in households?

A good place to start, by the way, is to be competent to be yourself. Look at yourself in the mirror. What do you see?

Thank you.

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

Word for the Day: Tuesday, August 17, 2010

The Word for Today (Tuesday) is Endurance.

This is an interesting word, on many levels! For example, strength training is often quite different than endurance training. (I personally prefer Yoga for endurance training).

Tying this to Domestication (the Weekly Theme), families can easily become an exercise in endurance, especially if they are dysfunctional.

Monday, August 16, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, August 16, 2010

The Word for Today (Monday) is Fertility.

First off, this word has multiple meanings, such as a fertile imagination. It also ties in quite well with Domestication (weekly theme), even as the fertile imagination, which can give new meaning to a relationship.

Sunday, August 15, 2010

Word for the Day: Sunday, August 15, 2010

The Word for Today (Sunday) is Stability.

I like to tie the Daily Word to the Weekly Theme, when appropriate. And I firmly believe that Stability goes well with Domestication. I feel a typical relationship has long periods of stability, with periodic spurts of quick change, whether permanent (i.e. moving to a new city), or temporary (i.e. a vacation outside the country of the current household).

This ties in with a Michael Teachings concept called the Nine Needs. The top two on the list are Security (which is related to stability) and Adventure (a need which, when followed, often triggers spurts of quick change). I consider that balance is important, as too much security can get boring, and too much adventure can get scary.

Weekly Theme: Week of August 15 - 21, 2010

The Theme for this Week is Domestication.

When I was a child, girls played a game called "House", where they learned what it was like to develop and run a household. The boys I knew (including myself) didn't take part in this game. Now, I believe we missed a lot by not playing, as there is a lot of learning that can take place by playing games, especially (in this case) role-playing games.

Saturday, August 14, 2010

Word for the Day: Saturday, August 14, 2010

The Word for Today (Saturday) is Release.

This word has multiple meanings. For example, one desktop computer of mine has a release lever, to open the case (for hardware upgrades). However, these words have more to do with our lives. And in that context, people sometimes equate release with liberation (which was the word for the day for Friday, July 30, 2010, around two weeks ago). For example, a person might look forward to a release from prison, either literally or a self-made prison (such as a poor relationship that that person felt like they couldn't leave).

That said, find that release lever for your life!

Friday, August 13, 2010

Word for the Day: Friday, August 13, 2010

The Word for Today (Friday) is Aspiration.

There are multiple meanings for this word (including a medical one). The one I like the most has to do with how one lives their life, and is related to the word ambition: "I aspire to be the best person that I can".

Thursday, August 12, 2010

Word for the Day: Thursday, August 12, 2010

The Word for Today (Thursday) is Contrast.

I consider contrast an important concept, as too little contrast can be boring, yet too much contrast can get quite scary. The key to this is balance.

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Word for the Day: Wednesday, August 11, 2010

The Word for Today (Wednesday) is Adaptability.

If you break this word down, you get "Ability to Adapt". Now, people can be forced to adapt, and those at the bottom of the food chain (for example, the homeless) are forced practically by the minute! But that doesn't make them flexible, as, often, earlier bad choices (which can include inflexible behavior in relationships) may have contributed to their current state.

Remember: Flexible people freely adapt to their surroundings. Inflexible people ask their surroundings to adapt to them. Which do you find better?

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Words for the Day: Tuesday, August 10, 2010

There are two Words for Today: Agility and Grace.

Agility implies fast, but Graceful, not necessarily. In fact, one exercise I've done in the past to develop a graceful walking style is to walk very slowly. One example of this are labyrinths that are found at various churches, as you are not supposed to rush through these.

Monday, August 9, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, August 9, 2010

The Word for Today (Monday) is Acceleration.

One moment, you're slow, and the next, you're fast. (And, if in a car, watch out for speed limits). I've talked about spiritual acceleration before. Can this ever be a problem? Well, appearances can make a difference, where "too slow" and "too fast" can appear like mental illness. (In this case, slow would appear like depression and fast would appear like mania).

Whatever you do, accelerate carefully.

Sunday, August 8, 2010

Words for the Day: Sunday, August 8, 2010

The two Words for Today (Sunday) are Patience and Tolerance.

These words go well with this week's theme, as they both promote good health. Patience slows you down, so that you take time to smell the flowers, as well as helping to cut down on accidents. Tolerance helps to maintain a healthy attitude towards others.

Weekly Theme: Week of August 8 - 14, 2010

The Theme for this Week is Health.

One thing to remember is that this word is multi-dimensional: Physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health. In other words, holistic health.

Saturday, August 7, 2010

Word for the Day: Saturday, August 7, 2010

The Word for Today (Saturday) is Acknowledgment.

This one is easy: I acknowledge those who have helped me to become the person I am today. And it fits in well with the weekly theme of Service, because it's always great to acknowledge those who are of service to you.

Friday, August 6, 2010

Word for the Day: Friday, August 6, 2010

The Word for Today (Friday) is Kindness.

Tying this to Service (weekly theme) is easy: Honest service to others is generally kind.

Thursday, August 5, 2010

Word for the Day: Thursday, August 5, 2010

The Word for Today (Thursday) is Encouragement.

Tying this word to Service (our Weekly Theme) is straightforward: Please encourage people around you, who are performing honest service to other people. This includes yourself.

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

Word for the Day: Wednesday, August 4, 2010

The Word for Today (Wednesday) is Thoughtfulness.

There is a difference between reacting and responding. Reacting can often be instinctive, with a name, "knee jerk" associated with it. Responding, if done correctly, takes thought.

One more thing: A thoughtless reaction can occur in a split second, yet take years to clean up.

Tuesday, August 3, 2010

Word for the Day: Tuesday, August 3, 2010

The Word for Today (Tuesday) is Support.

It is always a good thing to develop a Support Group. We normally get one when we are born, beginning with our family. (I say "normally", because there can be exceptions). Also, we often are a part of the Support Group for one or more other people.

One other thing about Support is that it depends on a firm foundation. And, finally, remember to support yourself.

Monday, August 2, 2010

Word for the Day: Monday, August 2, 2010

The Word for Today (Monday) is Comfort.

Tying this to this week's theme (Service) provides a question: "Are you comfortable serving others?" In my case, I suspect I would feel uncomfortable with myself if I weren't providing service to others.

Sunday, August 1, 2010

Word for the Day: Sunday, August 1, 2010

The Word for Today (Sunday) is Nourishment. Nourish your entire self: Body, emotions, mind and spirit.

Weekly Theme: Week of August 1 - 7, 2010

The Theme for this Week is Service.

How do you serve others? Happily? Not so? Your attitude does matter in this.

I like performing random acts of kindness that people around me don't expect.
